Payday Super is Coming

Payday Super is Coming: What Businesses Need to Know Before 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, one of the biggest changes to superannuation in recent years will take effect — Payday Super.

What is Payday Super?

Currently, employers are required to pay superannuation at least quarterly.

Under the new rules, super must be paid at the same time as wages, with contributions reaching the employee’s fund within a few business days of each pay run.

Why is this changing?

The reform is designed to:

  • Reduce unpaid or late super

  • Improve transparency for employees

  • Increase retirement balances through earlier contributions

With super being paid more frequently, employees will be able to see contributions appear in their accounts much sooner.

What this means for employers

This is not just a timing change — it’s a process and systems change.

You will need to:

  • Calculate super each pay cycle (weekly/fortnightly/monthly)

  • Ensure payments are received by funds within required timeframes

  • Align payroll, STP reporting and super payments

  • Manage tighter compliance and reporting expectations

Key impacts on your business

1. Cashflow
You will no longer hold super payments until quarter end.
This may create pressure, particularly for growing businesses.

2. Payroll systems
Manual or outdated systems may struggle.
Automation will become essential.

3. Compliance risk
The ATO will have greater visibility by matching:

  • Payroll (STP) data

  • Super fund data

This means issues will be identified much faster.
